Why don't we have reasonable Practice sessions?

"When you subtract the 4-minute boot bottleneck and the 5-minute pre-race split calculation lockouts, your actual track availability has dropped to roughly 10 to 12 minutes total."

That's the problem right there!

PH
Quick question since i don't have those lag when i try.
did you open the NAT in your router ?
Maybe this could help

I just tried to join a practice server (Bronze race). (10 min pratice server, 2 available, tried the first one)
15.52 sec to be in the car....
Start my stopwatch when i click join and stop after clicking drive the car and be able to throttle (to be sure i'm in control of the car)

I don't know what happens on your side but 4 min boot is NOT something normal in 1.3
OK i'm in EU but data are not convey to Canada on the back of an horse :D (4min remind me my 56Ko old internet)

It's not him that as a 4min boot, it's the servers...

Just to be clear, I am talking about daily races, bronze and silver levels, pre-registration practice servers. They run 18 minutes or less but are not joinable for RC Basic racers until there are only10 or 11 minutes of practice time left. Then, when usually 3 servers are offered, they often all show 0/24 drivers.

As others have I think already suggested to you on discord, this is likely due to the server timing. There are 3 events rotating in bronze, starting every 15 mins according to the current schedule. So that's 3 sets of event servers running all the time (each one fitting into a 45-min block).

Presumably they're running a single practice server set (starting with 3 servers) that are packed into the 15min block before each event. We know the servers take 4-5 mins to boot up, so that's your 10-11mins of practice remaining when you can join.

Maybe someone can chime in with how this is different to the timings previously used (outside the Logitech G Challenge, at least) which might explain why the available practice is shorter than previously. I don't pay enough attention to the event timings generally to remember what they were. I do know they've varied from time to time, as people complain about too long gaps between races and then complain about not enough practice time.

Are the silver events doing the same timing you've indicated above? I see they start every 20 mins instead of 15.

The silver races offer a bit longer sessions. I can add that for me waiting 8 minutes to join a 10 minute practice session is just not worth it.

Yeah, I wouldn't use that for practice either. In that situation I usually register for the race then go and practice offline until it's (nearly) time to join. Not wanting to go around in circles (I know we've spoken about this previously, and for various reasons you really want to practice online) but for me you either fight against the system (unless/until it changes) or use the tools available to serve you best. Don't ask don't get, but also don't keep doing the same thing and expect a different outcome.

I just don't understand why the devs 'fixed' something that wasn't broken at all.

I don't understand why it is so complicated. Based on the next races times in the screenshot above it would all be resolved if:
Sebring - practice servers open at 01:00 for 30 minutes
Fuli - practice servers open at 01:45 for 30 minutes
Monza - practice servers open at 01:15 for 30 minutes
That is really all anyone is asking. Is that too much?

"Is that too much?" is perhaps the pertinent question.

For people who want to practice longer online, the cost of running an extra set of servers will seem worth it. If the devs (staff/schedulers) want to have people racing rather than practicing, the cost might not seem worth it.

I assume there's no technical reason it couldn't be done.

Reality is the devs shouldn't decide what people should rather do in a game. People who want to practice should be able to do so, and vice versa. Nothing triggers a downfall faster than the owner of a product thinking it knows better than its customers. Imagine having the superior, and more recent game, compared to ACC and still having a lower player count on steam.

You don't get customers unless people like what you're doing. Not sure your player count comparison is accurate, but it's all by-the-by (and generally I think people who bring up player numbers are missing the point. A WEC-licensed game could probably get more players by being less of a sim and having more flashy features, and I hope it never goes that way); game devs (of any game) decide how they want their game to work, if they do think they're lacking/losing numbers due to how they're running things, and that becomes their main concern/goal, then they'll change it.

I fully understand this is a big factor for a portion of the playerbase (potential or actively participating) but that doesn't mean all players share the same view, nor that the devs are obligated to cater to it. As I've said before I also like online practice, and I used the longer sessions we used to have here.

There's literally a cost to running more/longer servers, so it's not a purely philosophical matter here.

It’s a reason I didn’t play this game because of practice session which are too short
If you didn’t practice you didn’t drive well in race
And after all driver cry because of bad driving standard lol

Online pratice isn't link to driving standard....
driving standard is in majority link to the amount of people and ego.

You can put all the practice server you want if no-one use them that's useless.

When you want to Practice you have two different objective :
- Learn the track
- Racecraft

1 = You don't need to be online to Learn a track
2 = if you want to learn race craft with someone who want to learn the track you are not learning race craft. You are annoying a dude who is trying to learn the track.

add to the equation the ffb stutter when someone log and you understand why practice in LMU is not really something.
If i want to improve, setup a car : i will always work off line. I don't need to stop the car to change my setup, don't have my flying lap ruined by someone who want to race craft while i'm tuning my car, etc....

I would love to see data of the amount of people using practice server. (i think this is extremely low. If this was high, LMU would add / advertise those)

Championship have longer server, special event have longer server
Why don't use them to practice with people ?

if you try in bronze no-one is gonna use a practice server for a 20 min race.

Next to offline mode, which is the ultimate trainer for any sitiuation there are enough hosted training servers. And the racecraftlevel between a rated practice server vs a hosted non rated server is the same. I did a full stint practice at Spa dodging all crazy happenings on track which is also a good training in looking forward. And sorry to say but i do the ten minutes training before a race to kill time, not to gain experience on a circuit. Maybe an half hour would be better as warmup but proper training is at least one stint: full tank of fuel empty

Of course but if I want to race with fixed setup in bronze (I’m platinum 3) just bc not having enough time I want to practice good the track a minimum
But with 12min left it’s impossible
Driver need practice to understand the car and the track before racecraft
And I have to wait loading of next session practice.. enough for me

As I have said numerous times.

The driving standards issue is not because of simply practice, there is no training and no tutorial facility here, this would help in many ways.

No it would not get rid of crap driving and silly decisions, but a few incidents at race starts, pit stops, and knowing the rules would help.

Agree tutoriel and video explaining about race raft and multi class would help of course

Why can't you learn that in solo ?
Bronze are always the same : Saturated + fixe setup (you load in solo with the fix setup)

Racecraft even if i don't think this is really efficient (since you don't have the same "pressure") you have convinced me :)

Other reason for practice server when you have solo, i'm sorry but i only see spoiled child who want more :D

AND
If you want to racecraft you can use weekly/special event where you have really long practice server :)
I don't see the point to have a 1 to 1 practice server.
You need to feel the car, adapt and sorry but you/we are not Verstappen level (at least 99% of people here) : you can't feel the difference between the online grip and the practice grip.

Even more on progressing event since the grip is dynamic so it depends on the real player not some arbitrary race line :)
