Most Worthwhile PC Upgrade

@RhinomanWC
Purchases have been made. I explained my predicament to my wife and we discussed it.
"We" are getting the 5700x3d, and 2x 16gb RAM. I have also ordered a 2tb M.2 SSD. I had a long hard think and this should to me well for a while, with a GPU upgrade at some point down the line.

The wife and daughter will cover the extra cost as my Bday present (which i reluctantly agreed to).

She doesn't game, although she has been know to randomly get addicted to a title here and there so i guess she can take use of it if ever she pleases.

Everything should be here tomorrow, but i'm not sure i'll have time to get it done on the day.
Is there anything specific i need to do when downloading the BIOS update to a usb drive?
this is a good setup, better than the current 13 and 14 gen Intels. m2 is pretty quick for loading the game.

Uff gave you good advice, also don't install beta/test bios drivers. I've done that, it was a hot mess.

Yeah that's a good way to see it. And to be honest I couldn't tell you the difference in-game.
Thank goodness. I guess it’s all part of learning PCs.

I have my 5700x3d, 32gb Corsair ram and an Arctic freeze 36 coming tomorrow.

Please tell me this all seems fine 😂

Thanks.

The bios update went well.

I tried to play a full gate grid offline today, 10fps was horrific.

It’s not so bad if I reduce the grid size normally but didn’t make a difference

Has the patch caused any general issues (I didn’t get the dlc as still learning gte cars and the other tracks)

i don't know yet, I haven't played the game with the new updates. Still middle of the day in the US.

P.S.
Problem with Orico hub seems to be the slots are not deep enough ( why a normal USB cable works )
I have gone back to using 1 metre leads for Logitech dongles to move them closer.
Plugging them directly in hub I get micro lag yet hub is only a metre from devices.
Plugging through USB2.0 leads placed on my soundbar with direct line to both KB's-Mouses ( rig and everyday ) they are perfect, weird.

I think also useful upgrade as good hubs like these allow me to run sim tower across room on desk.
Reduces rig footprint, easy access to tower , space to breath, less lead mess, reduced electromagnetic field.
Unlike electrical leads bundled USB leads running across a room don't suffer from heat or interference.
All that matters is the leads & hub are quality and self powered. Latency is not a issue then.
My towers have only one USB lead between them, depends which is running.
Some affect to extent depending on individual situation is not wearing expensive Motherboard slots.

I did a race weekend at Monza, 15m length race full grid. My FPS was around 100fps and my 99% FPS is around 50Ffps running on 4k everything on, including full motion blur. Performance seems to be about what it was before. Game was very smooth for me as usual. I get roughly the same type of FPS in both categories in F1 24 and this way smoother.

Hmm, I wonder why it’s so choppy for me. I did Bahrain online last night and it just didn’t seem right.

Maybe I tweaked a setting and forgot to change it back when I was playing with graphics levels to check fps and cpu/gpu useage.

New bits should be here today so we’ll see if that helps.

Some may not have noticed, you have a option to save custom profiles.
Yes absolutely test one change at a time no matter how long it takes, I spent a month tweaking settings, all cars, tracks and combos.

For mine, if you can't leave Le Mans 24hour running overnight, finish race, save a replay then load the replay ......you have work to do.

Doh. Too late now. Lesson learned.

It’s still an improvement but it explains why it’s not as quick as I expected.

Does it have much effect in game?
Hi @dom.au23 , hope you received your new components and that everything is going ok. Don't stress about SLC, MLC, TLC, or QLC based drives. You have a budget to work with, and the difference between quick M.2 NVME drives and SATA based SSD's is absolutely minimal with loading times, roughly a second. The video I linked previously and many others like that demonstrate the point. When it comes to loading times between different NVME drives (SLC, MLC, TLC, or QLC based drives) the differences are absolutely tiny.

I have a TLC based drive running on PCIE 4.0, I just timed my game a few minutes ago. I loaded up Circuit De La Sarthe, Full Grid 2024, all classes, for a 1hr12m race. The loading time was 2m25s. I have to say it felt very jerky during loading, much more that when I last played about two weeks ago. So don't feel bad about your drive, LMU does have long loading times. With online games the loading times are much less because there's less for your pc to generate due to human vs AI drivers. I don't know exactly which drive you bought but Crucial is an established brand and generally their products are very good.

Thanks. That’s almost exactly my loading time too.

I have all my bits now but a combination of a kids sports clubs today and a busy work day tomorrow means it might need to wait until Friday
BUT
the wife has a birthday party on Saturday so as long as I get it in and working by then, I have a whole evening/night to play.

Apologies for jumping in on this, but I've been reading the discussion with much interest. I bought my pc in November 2021, it's an i7-11700 with 16Gb of RAM and has a 3060Ti with 8Gb of VRAM. So far, it has run LMU pretty much faultlessly, OK, not with full grids at Le Mans (obviously) and not with graphics etc maxed out, but perfectly satisfactory for me to get great enjoyment out of the sim. I've been wondering about what (if anything) to upgrade and I thought I might double my RAM as that's an easy and relatively cheap option but I've also been thinking about the video card. But they're so expensive! I also struggle to get my head around the fact that what seems to be the same card is made by a number of different manufacturers, some of which I've read warnings about.... In the end, I'll probably just up my RAM and wait until I win the premium bonds to get another card! ;)
Hi @Aysedasi , no need for apologies! Your PC specs are quite good. To improve performance in LMU the biggest upgrade needed is...the game itself. LMU is resource hungry, more than any other game I've played. I ran a quick check, I loaded an offline race at Circuit De La Sarthe, Full Grid, all classes, Ultra settings, and my RAM usage spiked at 31GB then settled down to 28GB once the race started. After closing LMU my RAM usage went down to 8GB. I don't know if LMU will use all available RAM on a PC, so if a person has 64Gb installed I have no idea if it will try to use all 64Gb or cap itself at 28GB. Because of this it's really hard to say if doubling your RAM will result in any improvements. Regarding your GPU upgrade, it's critical to view reviews for an exact model and manufacturer. It can be hard to choose between Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, XFX, Powercolor, etc but reviews will usually tell you the pros and cons for different models. The differences usually comes down to cooling, overclocking, and warranty. And price as well, some brands just try to rip you off. I bought an MSI in the past which was priced low, but it was LOUD. Other models in the MSI lineup would have been very quiet, but double the price I paid. The card I have now is very quiet and I almost never hear it, but I had to pay for the silence and went with the better cooling option available.

Interestingly I've picked up coil whine today when booting the game up to run the abovementioned test. I never had coil whine in LMU before. The graphics also look really jerky and I pick up a lot of stutter and micro stutter. I haven't raced, but when I do I'll definitely look for any performance issues.

Real life!
Cool, hope your installations go well. I've picked up performance issues since the update but need to run an actual race and check performance. So far there's lots of stuttering and my GPU has coil whine, so there are definitely some changes.

Had an hour between meetings today. Its all in.
CPU fan needed a little wiggle n tug to get out, and pulled the CPU out with it. Then i remembered some advice I saw to run the pc for a bit to warm the CPU up - whoops. Its all in order and managed to separate it from the heat sink. It was actually pretty easy to do, new CPU in, new Arctic Freezer 36 in, new 32gb Corsair RAM in. I booted up after the CPU went in using the old RAM just to check. Once I saw it was all ok I swapped out the RAM.

Gosh its so much faster. Even just opening applications or switching internet pages is lightning. I'll try a few races later to see how it performs but right now I'm just happy it all works. I actually enjoyed doing it, cant wait to get a new Case and Motherboard so I can build another one from my spares. Might make it a mini ATX for the kids to play ROBLOX and do school work.

Anyway, all new kit is showing as it should in Hardware Manager and seems to be working as expected. I do wish I went for the ARGB Arctic Freezer now but oh well, it'll do the job.IMG_6864.jpegIMG_6865.jpegIMG_6866.jpegIMG_6867.jpegIMG_6868.jpegIMG_6869.jpegIMG_6870.jpegIMG_6871.jpegIMG_6872.jpeg

Now just peel off the plastic label from the top of the Arctic logo to get that 0,000001% of additional performance. :D
Joking aside, that part might become warm, so I would remove the plastic to avoid it from melting (even if it shouldn't become that hot).

Nice job @dom.au23 ! Really glad to hear the upgrade went well. That CPU is an absolute gem and quick as lightning, you've already experienced part of that.

Steam updated LMU earlier on and downloaded the latest hotfix. I can confirm the performance is back to being smooth and micro stutter is gone. Prior to the update micro stutter, as measured by AMD's Adrenaline overlay, was around 9 - 11%. It is now at a constant 0%. I did an offline race at Spa and it was butter smooth.

Please run that hotfix download and let us know how LMU performs now. Hope the game runs well and that you can feel the performance difference. You may need to tune your graphics a bit to get a good balance between high framerates and image quality, play around with the different settings. Really hope you have a great experience from this point onwards.

Oh yea, i did, i wanted to see the fans run before i peeled it off to make sure it was all ok.

I forgot to take a pic after the new RAM was in too, to show off its colours.

I am very happy with the upgrade. I think its also helped loading times as my CPU was that old and slow that it couldn't keep up with anything.

I had a go just now at Bahrain offline to practice with no aids (after reading another thread and since that's where the GTE races are this week) and it was so smooth, the race start was constantly over 90fps with zero stutter.

I wonder if the hotfix downloaded automatically as I have it set on steam. I'll check.

Its such a nicer experience, the smoothness and detail on the cars I'm racing adds to the overall feel of the game.

I will have a go with setting once I get a bit more time but even like this its great.

Here's a question I couldn't find an answer to - does a better/faster CPU impact the feeling through the wheel, since the CPU runs all the physics of the car and that feeds into the wheel?

Sounds like you've experienced quite a boost, that's great!
To answer your question about the CPU and the wheel, a better CPU will only help if the CPU was the bottleneck in the first place. Otherwise it should not have an impact on handling physics. In all probability if the CPU was the bottleneck
in the first place your fps would be so low the feeling through the wheel would be the least of your problems. You would basically be playing a slideshow, so matching steering movements to that would result in constant mismatches because movement on screen would not take place in parallel with steering input. Also, some games allow the GPU to process certain physics. Nvidia has / had Physx that would calculate things like bullet penetration in first person shooter games. I don't know if LMU relies on the GPU at all for the physics. There are also other factors that could play a part, I know it affects input lag from mice but I'm not sure if it affects wheels and pedals. Features such as AMD'S Adrenaline software has anti lag features, enabling V-sync can also cause input lag.

In short, give LMU a try with your wheel and see if there's a difference. The faster performance now may give the sensation of quicker input.

I think it might be your last point. It just feels like there’s a level of clarity in it that was there before.

What ever the reason, the overall experience is much much better.
