Dedicated Server

Me and my buddy only drive against AIs and one of us always says that this wil be so cool when we can play together as in a normal game with AI.

I can not understand why this is not a priority.

I have started checking out other games that have all these options.

It smells of a corporate minded initiative to get income per race initiated but in reality is an insentive to stop playing the game. I really hope the financial backers is expecting to get their money back and make profits like a Fortnite game forcing it through such a horrible bad server solution.

Only reason i still play is because its in developement. This should have been in the game from the very start and it would have attracted many new players.

I see all these other things that is "Coming soon" and i wonder why this is not at the top of the list!

If they have no plans of changing this solution then i have no plans of playing this simulator.

But, its in developement and i have great hopes because the game is really great, but i want to play with my friend against AIs and with my new sim-rig and VR, i invite more friends to try it to get them into this. And LMU is the game i use as a presentation 🏆

LMU is fun, looks good.
But the system with the servers is a complete ******* -up for any community.

What makes communities?
Training together properly, talking shop or simply doing a few training laps with a mate for 30 minutes in the evening. Or to have a short race with some of the mob on your own public servers to have fun and possibly find new members.

Of course, a league is also part of it, and racing together works best when you know each other.

We have an ACC community.
We have 2 training races and a league every 2 weeks,
several public training servers for everyone, and 30 public race servers for anyone who wants to race.
Of course the training laps are logged and analysed.

The whole thing costs around 50 EUR/month.

LMU doesn't even have the option of renting 24/7 servers, let alone hosting them itself.
Individual servers for 24/7 operation cost around 950 EUR.
Not to mention the fact that it is not possible to manage the servers with a team.
Access to log files, configuration via config files for faster administration. Preferential treatment of community members on your own servers?
Nothing like that.

Unfortunately, it looks like Kunos is heading for a similar story.
After all, they want to offer 24/7 servers, although at a high price.

Like I said, a half year ago here and in a Discord discussion - leagues will growing a game. Not only content creators! That´s fact. ACC wouldn´t be so succesfully without LFM. That´s also fact. This is a bit underrated from Studio 397, I think.

Getting into a game is maybe to drive single player events, driving open lobbies, but over the time the most people search for leagues. There are, normally, reallife stewards, you can drive competitive against other drivers, you will get a stream and not rare you will find buddies, to hang up with in voice channels. You can practice together, you can exchange your minds, setups, opinions and so on. And many people are getting better drivers. They getting faster, getting more fair,... Not to mention eSports events, where you can win cups, money or other prices.

We started our league with ACC. For this we rent a dedicated server system for round about 180,- EUR for 3 months. To bet our drivers the possibility to come into a LMU league, we have further costs, which we have to carry. But from a certain point we cannot handle this anymore. If we have to pay money for our dedicated server (where we could easy administrate LMU servers also), extra money for LMU practice servers and LMU race weekends, Streamer, Cups, SimGrid Subscriptions, RaceControl Subscriptions,... - at a certain point it will be too much, if I don´t wann lose my pension plan.

I absolutely understand, that you are working for profit! And that´s fine. But don´t forget, to look a little bit more outside the box. Your game will grow with leagues. Your profit will grow with leagues. This is not nonsense - LFM and ACC shows this.

Bet a little bit more for leagues - that´s my request!

60€/month for a server 24/7 used only 3h per day ? And most of the time with a few players only ? Maybe i exagerate ...

Or 2 practice sessions per week of 2h, or more for maybe half the price ?

Not sure it is more money.

Imo, the only real use of pure dedicated server is for managing rules, ratings and mods. Nothing to do with money reason, at least not priorily for leagues.

People thinking too much on money and lowest prices/free content is what surely ruined rFactor2.

Plus, there are already a few leagues on LMU.

LFM can probably already maintain leagues on LMU but they surely won't because of rFactor2 legacy and maybe redundancy on GT3 with ACC.

If I set up a LMP2 race through RaceControl that has 30m practice, 30m qualifying and 90m race for 20 drivers the cost is 75 credits or in the UK that's 75p.
If you have 20 races in a month that works out at £15... that's a quarter of the cost of renting a private server.
OK... it will cost more if you have more drivers but roughly in-line with the above costs

Otherwise, is there something else that completely missing here?

Yes, you are. I was able to host a private server in GSC, rFactor 1, rFactor 2 etc. for me and my teammates to practice with, for free. Having to pay for a private practice server which I can host myself is a regression.

The costs comes on top - not instead of. With the possibility to get dedicated server in LMU the costs could be instead of or at least reduced. The wishes of much league owners for dedicated servers are not absurd. Especially because known sims have been providing this successfully for years - without going bankrupt.

I also don't think that the lowest price and free content could ruin a great simulation. So please... There was less players, which brings us back to the leagues.

If you host endurance events with average more than 110 drivers on a server, than you need a dedicated server - OF COURSE! Otherwise your event will ending up faster as you can say "green, green, green". Believe me - i know what I´m speaking about, unfortunately.

Of course is there something else that is missing here. Like I said... The freedom to practice when I want with whom I want! I don´t know, if you mangage a league? But if yes, then you know what I´m talking about.

A league lifes from communication, training, share your minds and so on (see my post before...). If you want to play with two buddies, then you can rent a server for 2 hours, two times a week. No problem.

If you have a league with ACC and LMU events and more than 250 active drivers, than you maybe have 4 practice servers, 2 qualifier servers and race servers - PLUS LMU practice- and raceservers.

I don´t expect any gifts, here! But I´m hoping at least for special conditions for league owner - THAT´S IT! All other are steps in the wrong direction - in my opinion.

If you have your own hardware then a dedicated server option would be great as there are no ongoing costs.

And I can see that as i have a small server farm of multiple Dell PE610 and 410 servers myself running ACC, AC and rF2 servers. and a 1Gb connection with a static IP address.

But if you rent the hardware through an online provider and don't have a fast reliable connection then the RaceControl option may be cheaper to operate.

Im coming from gpl, rF1, GTR and so on. my Buddys and i made a simracing pause after all this time of about ~2 years. yesterday we startet again and of course wanted to try the follow up sim of our beloved rF2. We didnt like the new system of rent-a-server as a service. We always had and have a own server. Within the simracing pause we played other games, always with the requirement: There must be a dedicated server for the game. We can play everytime, we dont need to rotate who is willing to check out how to host, to pay, to search a server.

yesterday there where 5! non-rated servers without a password. all full and we didnt want to ruin others race because after 2 years you better train a lot first. So we paid a server (for 3 people that was from our crew online and willing) and everyone is not amused about it.

Yes there needs to be drivers that play ranked but for others that only race for fun, want to fight until one crash, change setups, talk about im skeptical that lmu will longterm make it since everytime 2/3/4/5 of us want to make a race we need to rent it. And some of us wont do this. It demotivated. I think we will reactivated rF2 and assetto with mods and with our own server.

That's exactly the problem our community has.
Because that's what the community thrives on: spontaneously cruising around on a server with a few like-minded people.
It's okay that the servers have to be paid for, as long as it's not excessively expensive.

The fact that there are hardly any public servers is due to the completely useless backend.
I can configure and start a maximum of one race.
Without Simgrid, I don't even have the option to copy the event.

And even then, I have to set the date and time for each server. To start 3 servers every day for a month, I have to repeat the process 90 times. Of course, it's best to do this in the morning, because during primetime the Simgrid site is so slow that it takes four times as long.

Access to the very detailed server logs for keeping statistics after the race, or even a pit wall during races, is of course also not available.

At ACC, we had a Discord bot that evaluated the training on our servers. On the one hand, this allowed the drivers to qualify automatically, and on the other hand, it encouraged them to spur each other on.

A tool ran in the backend that restarted 30 servers every day. At the same time, it was possible to configure the league server, and preparation servers were created and started accordingly.

The activity here shows quite clearly how important it is......
