Dedicated Server

Absolutely this... Want people to get invested in this sim? Give clubs the ability to set up their own servers so they can practice, share thoughts and advice and explore it without having to drive solo or endure the frenetic experience of racing randoms online!

And don't even think about using the original rF2 system of setting up a dedicated server!!! 🫣💩

I guess it's worth listing what we'd like from a dedi server, please add below but from my point of view, having organised leagues in rF2, AC, ACC and PC2, I'd like a dedi server that:

  • runs on linux or windows (cheaper and easier to find). If I had to choose linux 1st windows 2nd
  • is very lightweight, I remember rF2 consuming like 10x more resources than an AC one
  • can be run remotely with some software that 3rd party devs can build. It's easily launched programatically, so I don't have to remotely access the machine to get started. Something that reads a few json files with grid information, race information etc., so I can modify the settings and launch it with some kind of cron job, for example
  • things like liveries and driver information can be easily added (not content manager style). Maybe it's a folder that gets added. Again the idea for me is have some basic server software that works, but expect that people will be able to build tools around it so we end up having a easy to use web interface to run leagues. Build it with that in mind. One of the appealing factors of running AC/ACC leagues is that it's much easier to run.
  • I suppose you should be able to set minimum DR/SR, now that we have them
  • I'd say allow quickly to setup 2nd or 3rd race including reverse grids for top X based on results of previous race... but I reckon that's not really an ACO thing so maybe no need for it? Still nice to have if people want to do 2x 20min races with reversed top 10, even if that's not how ACO rules work

I would add :
  • Fixed setups, of course !
  • BOP possibilities : Mass penalty, % Power, tyre restricted ... by car/player
  • Class separation at start, delay setting, "all in one class" ( No Hypercar in the middle of GTEs whatever happens in Qualifications ! )
  • FCY
  • FreeSettings capabilities on Hybrid systems for Hypercars (Fixed Regen, etc.)
  • Plugin interface unchanged from rF2 like actual shared Mermory

I’ve never run an AC dedi but as an rf2 dedi admin, I was amazed how lightweight the AMS2 dedi is in terms of resources - but I don’t believe it tries to hold the mods/dlc on the server unlike rf2. It would need to be a major architecture change to achieve that - can’t see it happening.

AMS2 dedicated is only a sort of gateway to put players on same configuration. In reality one of the players is the final host.

If the "master" host quits the server, another player becomes the host. Very particular way of managing a server.

That's why AMS2 has almost zero resources linked to cars or tracks, only some references and no "heavy data" like the .mas in rF2.

AC also uses less data. It would be the equivalent of a rF2 server that only uses manifests and veh files. The rest would be purely "client" side.

rF2 servers uses the exact same amount of disk of the player part.

Server doesn't need any textures for example ... Why is it present in the dedicated data ?
Response : Easy solution, duplicate all data from game > No extra work for server > Done.

AMS2 and AC have a way more "thought" way of doing things dedicated side.

it is important to keep the servers dedicated, on rf2 when we do open or championship, the servers are online 3 weeks before so that the pilots can train.
I don't see myself renting a server by the hour for our events knowing that I currently have 4 dedicated servers on RF2 24/7
(google trad sorry ^^)

Create my server without RaceControl, a lot of portals held their championships in rF2, made their servers, and thanks to them there were many players and they bought content from you, now many have abandoned your simulator LMU since the servers are paid, you will only lose users!
For those who cannot host a server, leave the RaceControl option

Are you going to post this every day?

on my portal, users have already stopped buying add-ons for the game, since I will not hold championships with their paid servers

I live in Moldova, I have a monthly Internet package for 500 megabits costs $7, and electricity per month costs $5, the server costs at home, and works in rF2 24/7. In LMU, a 8-hour server costs us $ 6.5!
