LM Ultimate VR thread

Turns out it was a brain fart by me, I had changed Virtual Desktop to 120Hz, but missed the "Streaming" tab where it was still on 80fps target. My bad.

I'm now able to get up to 120fps which is nice.

Anyone know if you can (or should?) use OpenXR toolkit with Virtual Desktop? I'm so close to getting great performance in LMU, just need to push it a little further with optimisations.

EDIT: I should say that I'm already using VXDR (which is OpenXR within Virtual Desktop) which shows as VXDR +OC (OpenComposite) when in game. Just wondering if there are other tweaks I'm missing that Virtual Desktop does not offer.
Yes you can use OpenXR Toolkit with VD. I have excatly the same setup as you with a Quest 3. I only use the Foveated Rendering feature to optimize FPS even more (75 or 80 is a good spot). Other options are by default.

Thank you, good to know. I have OpenXR Toolkit installed now, working with LMU. I can't see Foveated Rendering anywhere in the menus, including in the Toolkit in-game. Am I missing something?

I am having a issue with the VR version of LMU.
First thing first, i used the opencomposite and openxr toolkit with meta quest 3 link cable a few months back. I was able to bypass steamVR and it did not launch when starting the game.

The problem i am having now is... How do i revert this change? I disabled the openxr toolkit and deleted the openVR dll thing then verified files. The game still bypasses SteamVR on launch.

How do i get it to run in the VR mode that was intended from the developers?

You sure you really want to go back to steam VR? I would think almost everyone would have better performance with open XR and the toolkit.
The only reason for steam VR is if using some custom overlays that you want to project into VR using crew chief or something like that.

Hi, I am able to play VR on Ryzen 5800x and RTX 4090 with medium graphics settings and 90% resolution in OpenComposite. However during night time, frame drops to around 70fps, since I am using Reverb G2 I need 90Hz. I have seen many benchmarks where there is a 30% improvement with 5700x3d on flat screen 1080p. Will upgrading to 5700x3d improve my situation or is the frame drops due to some other reason (like memory limitation) ?
You are massively CPU bound with a 5800x. The X3D versions are vastly superior in VR and Sim Racing.

Hey fellas,

Just bought LMU yesterday and I'm wanting to use VR in OpenXR mode. I have a Quest 3, 4080 and 5800X3D.

Using Virtual Desktop(VDXR-showing VDXR+OC(opencomposite) in the VD performnance hud) it works flawlessly with minimal latency since my 6E router is literally two feet from my head. I start my headset, start Virtual Desktop from inside my headset, then start LMU on my desktop (the Steam VR option). Like intended, SteamVR never opens. It's great but limited to 500Mbps per Virtaul Desktop's maximum.

However when I try to run LMU using OpenXR with Oculus Link and the link cable, it always opens SteamVR and uses that environment. I swapped the openvr DLL in the LMU root directory with correct 64 bit one and even tried OpenComposite, but no matter what it opens SteamVR. For AMS2, I just swaped the OpenVR DLL in the game directory and launch the SteamVR version in steam and boom SteamVR never opens and it just works. Anyone else having this issue and have any suggestions. The VDXR latency is actual LOWER than when i am forced to run it SteamVR with a cable, but I'd really like to compared the latency of QuestLInk/OpenXR vs VDXR. And I can run about 750Mbs via the cable method.

Thanks in advance!!

Make sure in the game properties of LMU (in your steam library) under 'general' the startup option is set to `Start LMU' and NOT 'Start in SteamVR'! - all corresponding, my menu is in german :). Also make sure in Startoption you type: +VR
Hope this does the trick!

I thought you didn't need the +VR in start options anymore and if the correct DLL was used, starting the game with Start in SteamVR mode would bypass SteamVR and go right into OpenXR. When I use Virtual Desktop, I choose the Strart in SteamVR option and it works corectly and does not open steamVR.
I give this a try!

I also just bought this and so did I, also thought it's not necessary anymore. All I can say is: Didn't start without +VR, but does with it. Then again, on my system oc is quite inconsistent lately.

I wanted to try it the way the devs intended but i loaded it up in VR without SteamVR last night after i wrote the original post and it is running great on my ancient CPU. So i probably shouldn't mess with it and leave whatever modifications i did to it months ago as is for now.

lol that is so funny because i was trying to do the opposite

Got it working, without the _VR. Turns out I didnt have the Meta App set as the default OpenXR client. Dunno why it work in AMS2 without it but it did. Virtual Desktop is really good, but using the link cable is even better. VD is awesome for full body VRChat, but sitting for a Sim, the cable really doesn't matter.

I got both working. VDXR is really amazing, especially if you have a good router and its in the same room as you and your PC. And the latency is surprisingly low. However, the link cable has even lower latency and higher throughput, like 750-800 vs 500 Mbps. HAving no cable is sweet for VRChat but for sim racing it's fine.
I will say this, OpenXR is so so so much better than using SteamVR. It looks better, has less latency, and a HUGE performance improvement.
LMU is the best VR sim racing there is, even better than AMS2 in VR. AMS2 VR took a huge hit after the 1.6 update.

Eh, LMU looks great in VR, but I think AMS2 edges it and that iracing is the king. iracing is just like, monitor clear on my setup (7800x3d, 4080, quest3)

with the res slider maxed, maximum MSAA settings in each game, 960 bitrate, I can get 1.3x SS in ams2, 1.4 in iracing, and 1.1 in LMU.

I'd love to see it with a 5090 though, I suspect it'd be the best looking one there when I can get iracing's clarity with the more modern assets

I know this has been asked before, but did anyone ever figure out how to get TinyPedal to work with OpenXR and projected into VR? I know it can work with Crew Chief, but that uses Steam VR and I want to find something that allows TinyPedal to work with OpenXR. I tried all the options in Openkneeboard and could never get it to work.

We really need a way to adjust exposure/brightness either in the settings menu or in the json file. Nighttime is undrivable almost on my end. Entirely too dim/dark/muted in all lighting conditions since they adjusted it a few updates back.

VP2 on my end, so XR toolkit is not an option with the vive console between steamvr and the hmd. I've attempted using the lmu settings widget and the game window on the monitor indicates reshade has been injected, but no matter the LUT and luma settings the image remains way too dark.

S397...this issue has been widely reported in the VR portion of your discord. Please give us some control as I can't even conduct nighttime stints competently at present. 99% certain it's a simple exposure value as if I tuck my view 95% into the dashboard I see the outside world get appropriately bright again then the minute I look through the windshield it's back to welding goggles. Crippling levels of exposure for many of us.

Yeah same here with Quest 3 link cable. Way to dark it makes sunny middle of the day racing feel strange and i have to stress my eyes. I can make it look better with the exposure setting in openXR toolkit but i have to use a old dll file. Not even sure if it matters about the old file thing

OpenKneeboard ought to get you there.

Hi all

I have a 1080TI and I've played AC and ACC with VR with an oculus rift cv1.

I wanted to know if it's possible to play VR in LMU with that hardware, and if I should just use the VR tools that I have Oculus Tray Tool (that I used for AC) and just roll with it or do I need to get anything else to have stable performance and just normal experience (I dont want the best picture there is I know I don't have the lastest hardware but in AC and ACC It worked fine).

I've read about openXR and other tools that I have no knowledge whatsoever, so if you guys reccomend them, could you be so kind to attach some links to youtube or anything?

thanks!
