grill setting in pit menu

can anyone tell me what this setting does (grill setting in pit menu), thank you.
If I don't have it backwards, adding grill blocks up the grill more. Less air goes to cooling your engine (water), more air follows your car aero and adds (a little) to downforce and creates less drag. So it's an engine temperature / car speed balance.

I always wondered why it can't be changed in the setup screen, but only on pit lane. I mean, you should be able to change everything in your box, why should you have to wait till you get to pit lane to change that setting?

Wait!? We're getting more confused than the "noob" here.

I think it is the same as "Water radiator cover" in the setup. They just needed a shorter name to fit the pit menu ;)
But I never tested it.

there must be some positive effect because setups seem to use "covers"

The Grille is something that is exclusively (?) for the Valkyrie Hypercar, and is a setting that can't be changed in the setup menu but only on pit lane. The covers for water and oil are entirely different things.

I've been trying to see if more cooling = more drag. IRL that is the case and in advanced RF2 mods things like bigger radiators (or less blanking) have a cost not just in drag but extra lift.
Several paid for setups that I have seen have all featured oil and water rads and brake cooling fully open.
When I close them up i see no change in top speed.
Is this something that the devs just havent got around to yet?

Playing on cooling affects the way cooling evolve.
Closed, it heats fast. Open, it heats slow.

On qualification laps you want engine and brakes optimal on second or third lap.

I you leave open, you will probably miss the second lap as optimal.

On endurance races, it's more complicated, it's a balance to find. None of open/close is the best option and it may vary during the day.

I already saw people driving with smoke on races. They probably kept the vents closed from qualification setup and their engine was heating too much. They still could end the race (<1 h), by the way.

Apparently, LMU is only half-heartedly accounting for the opening; the opening should also affect the top speed, but it doesn't seem to. And the fact that the engine doesn't break down when it overheats—it just smokes—is also a bit disappointing.

I've heard (!) that people their engine lost power over time and stopped entirely over time when overheating. As you would expect. Have never seen, heard or experienced it online.

Even fully closed, when it's not 30C outside, the LMP2 or HY will just take it over long distances.

In EA there has been a bug where all engines blew at Interlagos. Maybe they just removed the "blow" feature to be safe.

Anyway, there's really no evidence that the covers do anything physical (as Lazza made us think)

Temperatures definitely change and if you go over a treshold, at least graphical stuff happens, and in more extreme situations engines blow up.

The penalty isn't severe enough—if the engine gets too hot, it should break down quickly, not after hours. In AMS2, you can only drive 2–3 laps with an overheated engine before it's game over.
The same should apply to the brakes as well. And with the cooling system open, the cars should have a lower top speed due to wind resistance, which is currently not simulated either.

i changed it in pits the default was 1 gt3 i set it to the highest 11 and i had no steering it felt like heavy understeer ?
