+10 penalty - how to serve?

Got one at Long Beach. MFD during normal racing said N/A in the Penalty row. CrewChief would not shut up about it for 10 laps. Finally I had to pit for damage repair and <10> appeared in the penalty row. Penalty cleared.

Poorly implemented. No info on the reason for the penalty either.

Was there any other way I should go about this +10 penalty?

If I understand it correctly, you will automatically serve it at the pitstop, or if you don't do a pitstop, it is added postrace. It is thereby identical to Formula 1.
Maybe there should be a small handbook where this is noted down, like a how to play (including the official rules).

The lack of an in game explanation for penalties has been one of my complaints as well. It's hard to learn from your mistakes if you don't know exactly what they are. Even a post race recap with the reason for a penalty would be helpful.

This has been my understanding but CrewChief yapping threw me off.

Trace file in Userdata supposedly contains the reason stated.

I only recently learned about Trace.txt file from davehenry, and there is A LOT of data in it, but it's fairly hard to parse it and find what you need. Better than nothing though.

lol, the only way to peruse a trace.txt file is to search for specific terms, like penalty. Far FAR too much information in that document. Unless, of course, your game crashes. THEN look at the very end of the trace.txt.
The following will explain some of the penalties, but when I posted this, I had not experienced a time penalty, so there is no information on that particular penalty. MOST penalties need to be served within 3 laps, and you must use the MFD to toggle from pitstop to penalty. Otherwise your crew will perform a pitstop and you will have to go around again to try and serve the penalty again. (unless the penalty is a Drive Thru, then just happily motor past your waiting pitcrew with their big red flashing arrow)

Sounds like a stop and go 10 second penalty, use to get disqualified if you didn't stop within 3 laps.

Can you give a brief description of when this occurred? I'd like to try and duplicate it. Was it during the start? Or while racing another car?
Which class car?
Thanks

It was definitely during a chaotic race start, so who knows. Most probably a short overspeed during formation right before green lights started to appear. Otherwise it would have been a DT. And I am 100% positive I entered the pits after many more laps than just 3.

Let me remind you all that LMU has some text to inform on laps left to serve a penalty. No such text was visible. So it all worked as if by design.

Did you check the race results for dq or did you get a finished position.

V1.4.2.3 - Update 1.4, Patch 2, Hotfix 3 - 30th September
Build ID 25611540
  • Fixed an issue with mass penalties during race starts on shorter layouts with a large grid
Hopefully this helps

I definitely saw ppl getting +10 on the start.
Not sure what happened, though.

Time penalties were introduced in 1.2 but I can't find patch notes mentioning the start.
It would make some sense that if P2 gets ahead of P1 before the green it is treated like an illegal overtake.
But I guess no one except the programmer knows whats really going on

Found it. Illegal pass Lap 4. Not that it matters to me. To me it matters that the game interface is not clear about how to serve the penalty.

Note: trace_2026_09_28_16_11_06-59.txt

I'm all for in game explanations, but come on, a time penalty is pretty self explanatory.

I'll give you this:
Penalties should be shown in the post race screen (instead of the excessive chevronism)
along with exact time and reason. That would solve most penalty questions.
One could check the replay and immediately see/learn what happened
Someone could make this into a feature request
